The fast-developing Romanian city of Brasov continues its smart street lighting investment in the newest suburbs and neighborhoods
6 years since the first controller was installed in Brasov, inteliLIGHT continues to provide to Flash Lighting Services, Romania’s biggest lighting service provider, the technology for smart city development.
The first streetlight control project in Brasov started back in 2014, used PLC communications and took 16 months to install. At the time, 12000 lighting fixtures were upgraded in Brasov, which is one of the most appreciated touristic cities in Romania (more than 1.000.000 tourists yearly, from all over the world).
Since 2014, Brasov has been continuously expanding. During these years, people became more concerned with the environment and the concept of smart city evolved, with new forms and shapes tested and developed all over the world. When the city expansion required it, Flash Lighting Services, also an integrator for smart city projects, chose to continue the collaboration with inteliLIGHT to control the new LED lamps installation.
The initial lighting control solution was designed to support 3 engineering pillars, following Flashnet’s product development philosophy:
- Flexible and communication agnostic
- Future proof and easy to integrate
- Reliable groundwork for further smart city developments
This design philosophy determined the project’s long-term success, as the system allows the integration of new communication technologies, form factors and applications that were not even developed 5 years ago.
The latest development in this multi-year project was in December 2019, when 1000 inteliLIGHT LTE controllers and 20 inteliLIGHT cabinet controllers were installed in the newest neighborhood of Brasov. Today, the Municipality of Brasov uses multiple communication technologies (LonWorks PLC, LoraWAN, LTE, GSM, fiber optics), several controller form factors (wire-mount, in-pole, NEMA) and is looking to add parking management services, meteorological related information, pollution sensing, video analytics and traffic management to the same smart city infrastructure that promoted EV charging and city-wide security cameras 6 years ago, partnering up with different providers to achieve a truly integrated and open ecosystem.
