New IoT concepts, LoRaWAN® communications and unprecedented integrations with Alba Iulia Smart City 2018 program
More than 30 companies and associations, coordinated by Orange Romania, have accepted the challenge to develop a new smart city standard in the historical city of Alba Iulia.
Alba Iulia, ROMANIA – The Romanian Ministry of Communications and the city of Alba Iulia have appointed Orange Romania to implement the most complex Smart City in Romania, defining new standards for this still developing concept. Smart cities in general target improved efficiency and reduced carbon footprint for the entire city, but also lifestyle improvements and daily synergies for individuals.
Smart Cities have evolved in the last years, from narrow targeted improvement projects to more integrated, city-wide interactions and synergies. Although simple in theory, integration of several city services involves multiple technologies, different companies and local authorities – and it has not been tried on this scale before. International companies like Microsoft and IBM have gathered with local tech startups and several IT clusters and associations to elaborate the necessary synergies for a project on this scale.
Some of the applications will improve utilities management and citizen civic involvement, others target citywide Internet access, people mobility and the improvement of the touristic output. Furthermore, all the beacons, sensors and controllers will communicate using state-of-the-art IoT communications that will be easy to access throughout the city and will probably also boost other tech business initiatives. Besides 4G and WiFi, LoRaWAN™ will be one of the new communications infrastructures installed in the city, allowing long range low power radio connectivity for any compatible IoT devices.
Flashnet® is going to provide LoRaWAN™ connectivity throughout Alba Iulia, as a base for several interconnected sensors and controllers, included the new inteliLIGHT® LoRaWAN compatible controllers. inteliLIGHT® is a proven streetlight management system that will also be a part of the Alba Iulia Smart City project, bringing an awareness and intelligence layer to the existing street lighting installations.
‘We are very proud to have been chosen by Orange Romania to install LoRaWAN® infrastructure in Alba Iulia, giving access to the benefits of this modern communication infrastructure. It is now faster and cheaper than ever to build, install and operate IoT devices and we are committed to making this technology accessible to anyone who wants to build and integrate smart applications.’ Said mr. Lorand Mozes, CEO of Flashnet®.
