inteliSENSE, an IoT solution that offers all-round awareness for natural gas companies and consumers
Flashnet, an ENGIE company, developed a smart system that adds a smart layer to gas detectors. Whenever any alert is triggered by the gas sensor, inteliSENSE notifies both the consumers and the utility companies in real time.
Challenges and opportunities for the utility sector
Over the past years, utilities have been facing challenges regarding regulatory and efficiency indicators, rising operation costs and increased consumer expectations. However, technology can lend a hand to help overcome these shortcomings.
As many other sectors, the utilities sector is also going through a digital transformation, which creates new opportunities for development every day. A good example are IoT solutions, whose popularity is continuously growing. More than ever before, information is available in real-time, giving stakeholders a great advantage in taking decisions that bring about significant changes in the sector.
Moreover, these IoT solutions make the automation of operational processes possible which, besides saving time and money, adds great value to the municipality, providers and citizens.
What is inteliSENSE?
Personal safety is an important public concern and one of the main arguments for smart cities and smart grids. A gas leakage or malfunction, for example, can expose families and employees to accidents. In this case, a carbon monoxide/ methane gas detector is the first necessary safety measure.
Flashnet has set out to find smart solutions and contribute towards protecting citizens’ safety. Using ENGIE’s extensive operator know-how, Flashnet developed inteliSENSE, a smart IoT system that sends out warning notifications in real time to both consumers and utility companies if the gas detector identifies any gas leaks that may occur on the indoor installation. inteliSENSE is a solution to increase awareness and reaction speed, aiming for risk-free gas consumption.
The system consists of an electronic device connected to the gas pipe (gas detector and shut-off electric valve) and a web-based application that manages the backend office operations (creating and maintaining users and customers, the validation of field data and advanced analytic reports). Moreover, field technicians also benefit from a user-friendly Android application to keep them connected to the entire infrastructure.
What are the benefits?
inteliSENSE brings numerous benefits not only to consumers, but also to the utility companies.
Consumer benefits
- Find out in real-time if there is a gas leak
- Get real-time information about recommended behavior/ action (do not turn on the lighting, for instance)
- Inform family or team members, act immediately and avoid any accidents
Benefits for the utility company
- Awareness and control for any potential gas leak, including early detection of major system failures to avoid any accidents
- Allows fast interventions, even before the customer becomes aware of the situation
- Communicates relevant safety instructions to the consumer
- Track and improve safety procedures
- Create new value-added services
